Tokophobia: the extreme fear of pregnancy and birth

An intense, often debilitating fear of pregnancy and childbirth: real, remarkably common, and frequently undiagnosed. This is Fear Free Childbirth's complete resource on tokophobia: what it is, what it is not, where it comes from, and how women heal it.

Definition

Tokophobia is an extreme fear of pregnancy and childbirth that goes far beyond ordinary birth anxiety. It can be present before any pregnancy, can shape major life decisions (including whether to have children at all) and does not resolve with reassurance alone. It is a recognised condition, and it can be healed.

From Greek: tokos (childbirth) + phobos (fear), coined in clinical literature in 2000 by Hofberg & Brockington.

Two typesprimary (before any pregnancy) and secondary (after a previous birth)
